Sovereign Grace Ministries exists to start, establish, and strengthen local churches with the gospel, for God's glory. We are a family of churches in six countries, and provide ongoing teaching and training to other church-planting ministries on several continents.
With other Sovereign Grace Ministries churches we share:
- Vision to establish and support local churches
- Passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ
- Commitment to our doctrinal distinctives
- Desire to see the members of these churches glorify God in their public and private lives—both corporately and as individuals
As part of its commitment to equip and develop local churches, Sovereign Grace Ministries:
- Provides a number of resources (books, teaching, and music),
- Holds conferences (small group, worship, leadership, and regional Celebration events)
- Trains new leaders in its Pastors College

Brent Detwiler
Brent has served on the Sovereign Grace Ministries’ Leadership Team from its inception in 1982. He provides oversight to the churches throughout the southeastern United States and supplies leadership for our international involvements in parts of Asia and the Caribbean. He is helped by an extended team of men in fulfilling these responsibilities.
Brent also provides ongoing theological training for upcoming and existing leaders through his involvement with the Sovereign Grace Ministries’ Pastors College and conferences we conduct. In 1991, Brent founded CrossWay Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and served as its senior pastor through 2002. From this church base, he now serves our larger mission.
Brent graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in Indiana, Pennsylvania, in 1976, and earned a Master of Divinity degree from Melodyland School of Theology in Anaheim, California, in 1979. He then returned to IUP as a campus minister for Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship before becoming the first senior pastor of Lord of Life Church there. In 1982, Brent and his wife, Jenny, were sent out to Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, so he could serve on the emerging Leadership Team of Sovereign Grace Ministries and as Executive Director for the Leadership Training School and later School of Ministry (a forerunner of the current Pastors College).
In 1983, Brent and his family relocated again, this time to serve Fairfax Covenant Church, a newly adopted Sovereign Grace church in Fairfax, Virginia, as the interim senior pastor. In 1985 and 1987, the Detwiler’s relocated for 6 weeks and 3 months respectively, to help establish Sovereign Grace churches in Daytona Beach and Orlando. In 1991, he and his growing family were sent out from Fairfax Covenant Church with Bob Kauflin to plant CrossWay Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He and his wife, Jenny have been joyfully married for 23 years. They have four children and one grandson. They live in the University City area of northeast Charlotte. |
